The Library Service aims to provide access to the knowledge base, and to enable effective use of information resources in order to support practice, continuing education, training and development for all staff.

Who Can Use Library Services?

  • NHS staff working in Northumberland Tyne & Wear area
  • Students on placement

How do I Join?

Complete a registration form from the library. Please have your ID badge, or student Smartcard card with you.

Book Stock

The stock consists of 13,000+ books. Users can borrow up to 10 books at once.
The library catalogue of local NHS libraries is available at: https://of-nenhs.olib.oclc.org/folio/

Login to the Library Catalogue with the barcode number of your ticket and your password (i.e. Surname) to reserve or renew books

Books should be returned to:

  • the Library during opening hours
  • a letterbox outside the Freeman Library
  • boxes in Reception areas of Leazes & New Victoria  wing, RVI 

Electronic Resources

Online resources are available via Library web pages on the Intranet and Internet web sites. In addition to print journals we provide access to eJournals, e-books and web links to selected Internet web sites.


Databases are available from NICE: NHS Evidence, including: Medline, Embase, CINAHL, AMED, PsycINFO. Also other databases such as the Cochrane Library, TRIP and PEDRO are avilable

OpenAthens Accounts

Access to online resources is available, from work or home, through a single OpenAthens Account login. You must provide a work, email address to register.

Make a Request

Library Staff can obtain most items not held in stock. A charge may apply for articles and books not held in local NHS libraries. To request an item, complete a request card in the library, or place your requests online

Literature Searching and Current Awareness

Library Staff will undertake literature searches on request to support research, practice or service delivery.

Current awareness services can be provided to individuals or groups and comprise of:

  • New books Lists
  • Mailing of Journal contents on publication
  • Regular lists of new journal articles based on individual user needs and interest
